Practicums
- What is a Practicum?
Small, faculty-led practice groups allow students to refine their skills through role-plays, discussions, and direct feedback, ensuring practical application of RLT strategies.
The RLT Certification outlines three practicum requirements for certification:
Practicum 1
This foundational training provides an in-depth introduction to the RLT model, covering core concepts and techniques essential for effective couples therapy.
Practicum 2
Building upon the Bootcamp, this intermediate-level training delves deeper into the application of RLT principles, focusing on advanced therapeutic interventions and strategies.
Practicum 3
This advanced practicum emphasizes mastery of the RLT approach, including complex case handling, refining therapeutic skills, and integrating RLT methods into diverse clinical settings.
Students also partake in small group mentoring and must submit a case review.
- What is the format of the Practicums?
Virtual (Zoom) practical sessions in small groups (max. 10 people) facilitated by the RLT faculty. Time commitment for each practicum is 24 hours spread over 4-6 days of training. Different times and days are available for your convenience.
- What is inside a practicum/ What does the practicum entail?
Inside the practicum it's all about "practice and integration". You will repeat core parts of the theory, but jump right into role playing, discussion rounds.. etc.
The practicum will help go from "theory" to "application".
- When is it recommended to sign up for Practicum 1? (Coaches and Therapists)
Roughly 90 days from when you first sign up for Certification is when you should schedule your first practicum. Before practicum starts you must have completed RLT Level 1, The Art of Relational Living as well as the RLT Sessions over time, first 8 sessions.
During the first 3 months, you will be training with these three courses to build your foundational knowledge, as well as seeing how Terry applies the model throughout the course of therapy in RLT Sessions Over Time. This is also when you develop your own relational skills with The Art of Relational Living. By month 4, we anticipate you’ll be ready to join Practicum 1.
- When is it recommended to sign up for Practicum 2? (Coaches and Therapists)
After you have completed Practicum 1 you can schedule Practicum 2 for roughly 90 days in advance. During that time you must complete RLT Level 2 and 3.
This is also an excellent time to join your first Couples Experiential to observe Terry’s sessions LIVE.
- When is it recommended to sign up for Practicum 3? (Therapists only)
After completing your first small group mentoring and presenting a successful case review, you become an RLT Certified Relational Coach - an exciting step on your path to becoming an RLT Certified Couples Therapist.
At this point, we anticipate that you’ll be ready to join your final practicum (lasting 6 weeks). We also encourage you to observe your second live Couples (or Men’s) Experiential with Terry and see how your understanding of the model has developed since your first.
